Registering a vehicle in Alaska involves several important steps and considerations unique to the Last Frontier. Whether you’re a new resident relocating to Alaska, purchasing a vehicle within the state, or shipping your car from the lower 48, understanding the registration process is essential for legal compliance and smooth transitions. With Alaska’s distinctive geography and specific state regulations, the vehicle registration process differs in several key ways from other states.

Requirements Before Starting the Registration Process

Before beginning the AK registration process, it’s important to understand the timing requirements that apply to your specific situation. New Alaska residents must register their vehicles within 10 days of establishing residency in the state. Residency is typically established when you accept employment, register to vote, apply for an Alaska driver’s license, or otherwise indicate intent to remain in Alaska. If you’re a current Alaska resident who has purchased a new or used vehicle, you must complete the registration process within 30 days of the purchase date, regardless of whether you bought from a dealer or private party.

For non-residents visiting Alaska, you may legally operate a vehicle with current out-of-state registration for up to 60 days. However, if you’re in Alaska for work or establishing residency, the 10-day registration requirement applies. Knowing these timeframes is essential to avoid penalties and ensure compliance with Alaska’s vehicle registration laws as you settle into your new home or add a vehicle to your household.

Required Documentation and Forms

Gathering the correct documentation before visiting the DMV will save you time and prevent multiple trips. The Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires specific paperwork to process your vehicle registration successfully, and being prepared will help ensure a smooth transaction.

Driver’s license or state-issued identification card

Proof of ownership (original title or manufacturer’s certificate of origin)

Current out-of-state registration (if applicable)

Bill of sale or signed title transfer (for recently purchased vehicles)

Completed Application for Title & Registration (Form V1)

Lien release documentation (if applicable)

Proof of insurance meeting Alaska’s minimum requirements

Emissions test certificate (if required in your area)

Vehicle Inspection Requirements

Unlike many other states, Alaska does not require comprehensive safety inspections for most personal vehicles during registration. This streamlined approach makes the process more efficient for Alaska residents. However, specific areas do require emissions testing to ensure environmental compliance, though these requirements are not statewide.

If your community mandates emissions testing, you’ll need to obtain a certificate verifying your vehicle meets state standards before completing registration. Check with your local DMV office or website to determine if your area requires testing. Commercial vehicles, especially those used for interstate commerce, face additional inspection requirements beyond the standard process, including federally-compliant safety inspections.

Alaska Insurance Requirements

Alaska law requires all registered vehicles to maintain liability insurance that meets the state’s minimum standards. These requirements are non-negotiable for legal vehicle operation. Driving without proper coverage can result in license suspension and significant fines.

Alaska’s minimum policy requirements include $50,000 for bodily injury or death of one person, $100,000 for bodily injury or death per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. You must provide proof of this coverage when registering and maintain it throughout your registration period. This is especially important when shipping a vehicle to Alaska, as you’ll need coverage in place to complete the registration process upon arrival.

Step-by-Step Vehicle Registration Process

Understanding the Alaska vehicle registration process will help ensure your registration proceeds smoothly without unnecessary delays or complications.

1. Submit Documents for a Title Transfer

The first step in registering your vehicle in Alaska is submitting documentation for a title transfer. If you’re bringing a vehicle from out of state, you’ll need to surrender your current title and apply for an Alaska title. For vehicles purchased from Alaska dealers, the dealership typically handles this paperwork for you.

Bring your vehicle’s original title (or manufacturer’s certificate for new vehicles) to your local DMV. For financed vehicles, provide documentation showing lien information. For private party purchases, ensure you have a completed bill of sale and title transfer signed by the previous owner. This step establishes legal ownership and prepares the way for vehicle registration.

2. Complete Form 812 (Vehicle Registration Application)

After the title transfer, complete Form V1, the Vehicle Registration Application. This form creates the official record in the Alaska DMV system and establishes your vehicle registration.

This form requires your personal information, vehicle specifications (year, make, model, VIN, color), and current license plate number or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Complete all sections accurately to avoid delays. The form also includes options for registration period and special plates, if applicable. You can get this form at your local DMV or download it from the Alaska DMV website to save time during your visit.

3. Pay Applicable Fees

The final step involves paying all required fees to the Alaska DMV. The total amount depends on your specific vehicle and situation.

Standard fees include a $15 Title Transfer Fee for issuing a new Alaska title, Vehicle Registration Fees (typically $100 for a two-year period for standard passenger vehicles), and a $15 Duplicate Title Fee if needed. A $25 Late Title Transfer Penalty applies if you miss the required timeframe. Some municipalities also collect a Motor Vehicle Registration Tax (MVRT) at varying rates. Having payment ready in an acceptable form will expedite this final step.

Special Registration Situations and Considerations

While the standard registration process works for most vehicles, Alaska offers special provisions for certain situations that may affect how you register your vehicle. Understanding these special circumstances can help you navigate the registration process more effectively if they apply to your situation.

Military Vehicle Registration in Alaska

Active duty military personnel stationed in Alaska receive special considerations when registering vehicles. Service members can choose to maintain their home state registration or register in Alaska, providing flexibility based on their situation.

Military members registering in Alaska may qualify for reduced fees with proper documentation. Bring your active duty ID, current orders showing Alaska assignment, and proof of ownership to the DMV. Staff can guide you through options based on your circumstances, including potential tax benefits and special military license plates available to service members and veterans.

Out-of-State Vehicle Registration

Bringing a vehicle to Alaska from another state requires specific steps to ensure a smooth transition. You’ll need to surrender your out-of-state title and registration while applying for new Alaska documentation.

Provide your current out-of-state title and registration, complete Form V1, and pay all applicable fees. For financed vehicles, contact your lender in advance to arrange the title transfer, as this may require additional time. If you’ve recently purchased a vehicle outside Alaska and are shipping it to the state, ensure you have valid temporary registration during transit to avoid penalties for delayed registration.

Alaska’s summer temperatures are extremely pleasant. As a result, moving to Alaska in August is one of the best times. The temperatures are not too cold nor too hott; they’re just right. In August, you can expect daytime temperatures to range from 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, the further north you go, the longer the day you have. North of Fairbanks, the day is 24 hours long. In Fairbanks, you can expect to see daylight for 22 hours. Anchorage has 19.5 hours of daylight, and in Juneau you can expect 18.2 hours of daylight. As a result, extended daylight hours with cool to warm temperatures makes moving to Alaska in August the perfect time. You can unpack, organize, and set up your new home without the need for a heavy winter jacket, boots, gloves, scarfs, and hats. This will make it easy to lift, carry, and transport all of your boxes and belongings. Also, with a laundry list of things to do that accompany moving, you will have extra hours in the day to complete it.

Car transport times are often dependent on popular routes and seasons. If a route is popular, such as New York to California, your car will be assigned to a carrier quicker because it is a popular route. August happens to be a busy month for car transport companies with students going back to college, summertime visitors heading back to their primary residents, and busy schedules that don’t allow drivers the time to physically drive a car to its new destination. As a result, there are more carriers on the road. This is beneficial to you because that means your car can be picked up by a carrier quicker.

Considering relocating to Alaska, but not on a time constraint? Why not move now? Moving to Alaska in August has its perks and we are here to help you get started on your car shipment process.

Are you looking to relocate to Alaska? Are you shipping your car from your current location to Alaska? What do you need to know about registering a car in Alaska? By law, registering a car in Alaska needs to be done within 10 days of entering Alaska or taking employment in the state. In order to register your car, you need to submit the following: current out- of- state registration, proof of title, form 812 which is an application for title and registration form, and associated fees. In addition, when registering a car in Alaska, you need proof of car insurance. Alaska law requires that owners of cars have liability insurance. The liability insurance must cover all of the following: $50,000 for bodily injury or death of any one person, $100,000 for bodily injury or death for any accident, and $25,000 for property damage. Failure to have this insurance in effect can lead to a suspension of a driver’s license. Once you follow the easy steps mentioned above, you will have your registration for two years. When the two year period is up, you will need to renew your registration. Every vehicle is assigned an expiration date when the vehicle is first registered and it forever keeps that month, even when the ownership may change. If you happen to let your car registration expire for less than a full year, then you will be charged the full biennial fee beginning with the month that the registration expired. There is also a Motor Vehicle Registration Tax or MVRT that is applied to all registrations. The tax rate varies for each location of municipalities and boroughs.

Many parts of Alaska are rural and are located outside the bustling towns and cities. While many who live here enjoy the countryside and its quietness, the rural communities do bring about a challenge. Many rural areas do not have any DMV offices nearby, so where does one get a license? Alaska now offers off highway licenses. The challenge many young adults were running into was finding employment when many jobs require a driver’s license. As a result, the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles offered an additional service to its rural residents. Off highway licenses allow the driver to drive on roads that are not connected to the Alaska State highway system, and on roads that are not connected to a highway with heavy daily traffic. Best of all, since DMV offices aren’t located near rural communities, individuals can get off- highway licenses through the mail. Although your off-highway license will have no photograph, it is still a valid license for off- roads.

Interested in off highway licenses? In order to get an off- highway license, you will need the following completed, which is all the typical licensing requirements except the road test:

Pass the written portion and vision test

Pay the fee

Provide original legal documents that verify your date of birth, social security number, and identity

No skills (road) test is required

Alaska also offers an off highway commercial driver’s license. Alaska is the only state that offers this opportunity to its residents. The requirements are pretty much the same, with the addition of passing the commercial motor vehicle driver general knowledge test.

If a resident obtains an off highway license because they live in a rural area, but then decides to move to a more populated city, he/she is able to remove the off highway restriction. In order to do this, the individual would need to complete a road test at the DMV office.

Running into your house real quick? Doing a quick errand that will only take a few minutes? Why not just park your car and leave your engine running? Known as idling, what do the experts say about whether to idle or not to idle? Idling your car creates pollution and is not necessary. Idling your car for just ten seconds wastes more gas than shutting off your car and restarting your engine.

To idle or not to idle so that my car can warm up? One of the major misconceptions about your engine is that it needs a warm up. Today’s cars and engines do not need any sort of “warm up”, even in winter months. The best way to “warm up” your car and engine is to ease into your driving. Rather than revving your engine and picking up speed right away, ease into your driving, and within a few seconds, your engine will be warmed and ready to go. Your engine warms up twice as quickly when driving than sitting and idling.

Okay, so your car’s engine doesn’t need to be warmed up, but what about the interior of your car? To idle or not to idle so my seats and interior can become warm? Idling your car so that you can warm up the interior increases pollution and dirty exhaust. Similar to your car’s engine, the best way to warm up the interior of your car is to drive it. If it is crucial that you warm you your interior prior to driving, then it is best to wait inside your house or building until your car is warmed, rather than sitting inside the idling car. However, don’t idle for too long, as idling can actually increase the overall wear and tear of your engine since it is operating longer than necessary.

What Are the Best Months in Alaska?

Alaska’s summer months are from mid- May to mid- September, making peak season mid- June to mid- August. Therefore, June, July, and August fall into the best months in Alaska to visit. Days during these months are considerably longer, which allows you to jam pack your days with activities.

May is considered one of the best months in Alaska because you can experience Alaska and all it has to offer without the huge crowds that occur during peak season. In May, you can explore Alaska with reduced crowds, lower fairs, and better climate to view wildlife. The reason wildlife viewing is better is due to the fact that it is not too hot yet for them. One wildlife you can expect to see in May is the humpback whale.

June 21st is the longest day of the year in Alaska and the sky is lit up all night long. On this day the sun only sleeps for about 4 hours. With that, you can expect warmer temperatures, and a drier climate. June is the driest of all the months in Alaska. Even though the temperatures are on the rise, you can still expect to see lingering snow well into mid- June.

July is considered one of the best months in Alaska due to its temperatures. In July you will experience the warmest temperatures. The water can get up to 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Alaskan King Salmon can be fished well into July and the waters have plentiful because July is peak for the fisheries. Since July is in the middle of peak season, you can expect to pay a bit more for hotels, excursions, and food. Places tend to charge more since they have a short season to make their money.

August is considered one of the best months in Alaska to see wildlife. You can expect to see black bears, grizzlies, and brown bears fishing for salmon in the rivers. In late August, thousands of Sandhill Cranes begin their migrate through Fairbanks. However, if you are going to be in Alaska for August, be sure to pack an umbrella or poncho. August is also known to be the rainiest month of all the summer months.

You think about which of the best months in Alaska works well for you, and let us worry about shipping your car there so you can enjoy all Alaska has to offer in the summer.

Lots of car enthusiasts can’t wait until summer. There are a host of car shows to enjoy when the nicer weather rolls around. If you are a car enthusiast, you might even enjoy a road trip with the top down every now and again. However, if you are bored with the same old routine, why not take a car trip to go visit some more cars instead of waiting for summer time to roll around? There are quite a few car museums that will drive you crazy, but in a good way. No matter which corner of the states you visit, you’re bound to find one you like.

National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY
If you’ve always loved the Corvette and have been a big fan, you’re almost guaranteed to enjoy the Corvette Museum. This museum is like a Corvette playground. Here you’ll find plenty of one-of-a-kind concept cars that never quite made it into reality and also the one and only 1983 Corvette there is.

The Quad Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas
While the Quad is a hotel casino in Las Vegas, it also houses 1,000 of the coolest cars around. This museum has an eclectic mix of cars from vintage to muscle cars. Some of the cars have a backstory of history and interesting backgrounds to go along with their beauty and prestige. The collection is worth more than $100 million dollars. That alone is enough to make any car enthusiast want to go to Vegas.

The National Automobile Museum – Reno, Nevada
If you’re in Nevada visiting the Quad Hotel and Casino’s collection of cars, (also known as the Harrah’s collection) why not make it an extended event. With over 200 vehicles here, there’s no gambling on the fact you’ll find something to love. The movie-like sets offer sights and sounds of the era so that you get the full effect of a time gone by.

Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum in Fairbanks, Alaska
If you’re planning a trip to Alaska, there are some really great road trips to experience there. Like nowhere else in the states, the combination of isolation and beauty is a compelling one. If you want to see a good collection of cars while you’re visiting, then the Fountain Head Antique Auto Museum in Fairbanks is a pleasant trip.
What makes this particular museum so interesting is that just one look and each car tells its own story. The horseless carriages, the steamers, and the midget racers all have a tale all their own. The stories of these cars are told in many ways from photographs to videos. Some of the rarest cars around are found in this locale.

Henry Ford Museum
What would a road trip to a car museum be without a trip to Dearborn, MI to the Henry Ford Museum. Planes and automobiles of all sorts are found here, as well as tours, displays of all kinds and an IMAX theater where you can learn more about these historical pieces. Imagine a race car next to a presidential vehicle that is across from an old Ford. Not only are there acres upon acres of cars to check out, there are innovative and inspiring displays of all kinds. You might bump into Mark Twain’s writing table or spy a replica of the Wright Flyer plane. There’s something here for everyone in your family to enjoy. There are also family-filled events, workshops, and holiday specials going on throughout the year. If you liked these car museums, you might be interested in a more comprehensive list here.

One of the biggest travel trends today is that of multi-generational families traveling together. Boomers are finding themselves in the position of staying close to aging parents and raising younger children. Older folks are living longer than ever before and this means a whole lot of togetherness. What better way to share family memories and experiences than to travel to Alaska together.

In the vast wilderness, you can find plenty of adventure, share inside secrets, and create new memories.

Un-Cruise Your Way to Alaska

InnerSea Discoveries has created what they deem an “Un-Cruise” where you get to choose an adventure that is flexible and in alignment with your Alaskan vacation dreams. While bigger cruise lines host hundreds of thousands of travelers, your InnerSea Discoveries “Un-Cruise” can offer you a more intimate Alaskan experience.

On an “Un-Cruise” you can get up close and personal with wilderness and the wildlife that it holds. Whether you wish to see the Inside Passage on a seven-day small ship cruise or a 21 day sail in Glacier National Park, an “Un-Cruise” will surely float your boat.

Surround yourself in the midst of icy glaciers or come as close as you ever thought you could to a breaching whale. A small ship adventure will have you receiving more personal attention and possibly a more rewarding Alaskan adventure, as you share moments of a lifetime with each of your family members.

Take a Tour: See the Sights

When traveling around with your family clan, you will want to have everything planned out to the best of your ability. Sometimes this will require the aid of a tour company. An experienced Alaskan tour company and guide can make certain that all of your extended family’s needs are met and everyone has an exciting adventure.

Imagine sitting around the Thanksgiving table next year and everyone has a thrilling anecdote from your Alaskan adventure to share. There are no inside jokes, only stories about Alaska’s Inside Passage.

Picture sharing your anecdotes about gliding in on Alaska’s waterways on a float plane as a family or the time when you got “this close” to a humpback whale you could almost touch it or even the moment when a family of bald eagles regally soared over your heads.

A tour company offers many benefits. You can book your tours with confidence knowing that your entire family’s needs are taken into account and everyone will have an exhilarating, personalized adventure in Alaska.

A tour company offers you the opportunity to ask for special needs or assistance and can take the leg work out of accommodating everyone and making them all happy. All you have to do is sit back and prepare for the exhilarating trip of a lifetime.

Traditional Cruises

Princess Cruises offers their “North to Alaska” cruises where you can find yourself enveloped in the midst of award-winning experiences. You can opt for a land and sea Alaskan vacation where you get the best of both exhilarating worlds. With Princess Cruises “Alaska on Board” you don’t have to wait until you arrive in The Great Land to enjoy savory, delectable and fresh seafood. Enjoy authentic Alaskan fare and specialty dishes.

With Discovery at Sea, you will be entertained as hit shows such as Shark Week or Deadliest Catch are brought to life. You can learn more about Alaska’s marine life right on board the ship or enjoy a Klondike Festival on board where there’s something for everyone to enjoy – even panning for gold.

With a traditional cruise, the multi-generational family members have it made; there is no loss of fun and entertaining things to do for everyone – leading up to the climax – your arrival in Alaska.
